Should I worm my Guinea Pig?

Worming guinea pigs is generally not a routine procedure unless there is a specific reason to suspect a worm infestation. Guinea pigs can occasionally contract internal parasites such as roundworms or coccidia, especially if they are housed in unsanitary conditions or if they come into contact with contaminated food or bedding.

Here are some signs that might indicate your guinea pig has worms or other parasites:

Weight loss: If your guinea pig is losing weight despite a normal appetite, it could be a sign of a parasitic infection.

Diarrhoea or changes in stool consistency: This could indicate gastrointestinal issues, including parasitic infections.

Lethargy: Parasites can cause general weakness and lethargy in guinea pigs.

Visible worms in stool: In severe cases, you might notice worms in your guinea pig’s feces.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to take your guinea pig to a veterinarian who can perform a faecal examination to determine if worms or other parasites are present. Based on the diagnosis, the vet will recommend an appropriate treatment.

While routine worming is not typically necessary for guinea pigs, monitoring their health closely and seeking veterinary attention if symptoms of parasites are observed is crucial for their well-being.

There are worming syrups specifically formulated for Guinea Pigs including Aristopet Small Animal Wormer and Troy Puppy and Kitten Worm Syrup.
