It’s not always easy to tell if your cat is properly hydrated, they’re good at hiding when something’s not quite right. But there are a few simple things you can check at home.
A well-hydrated cat will usually be bright, alert, and eating normally. Their gums should feel slightly moist (not dry or sticky), and they should be using the litter tray regularly.
You can also do a simple check by gently testing their skin, known as “skin tenting.” Lightly lift the skin at the back of your cat’s neck or shoulders and then let it go. In a well-hydrated cat, the skin should spring back into place quickly. If it’s slow to return or stays slightly raised, it can be a sign they may be dehydrated.
It’s also worth keeping an eye on their litter box habits. Smaller clumps or less frequent urination can sometimes mean they’re not getting enough fluids.
Signs your cat may not be well hydrated include:
- Lower energy or seeming a bit off
- Dry or tacky gums
- Eating less than usual
- Sunken-looking eyes
- Changes in urination
If you notice any of these, or a sudden change in behaviour, please consult your vet.
