Keeping your cat’s litter tray clean helps control odours and gives your cat a comfortable place to toilet. Daily scooping is different from completely emptying and washing the tray.
Scoop Every Day
Remove faeces and urine clumps at least once or twice a day. If you have several cats or a heavily used tray, you may need to scoop more often. Top up the litter as needed to maintain the recommended depth.
When Should I Completely Change the Litter?
There is no single schedule for every type of litter. Clumping, crystal and other litters absorb waste differently, so how often you need to replace the litter depends on the product, the number of cats using the tray and how quickly it becomes soiled. Follow the manufacturer’s directions and replace the litter sooner if it becomes wet, dirty or noticeably smelly.
Don’t Forget to Wash the Tray
When you completely change the litter, empty the tray and clean it thoroughly with warm water and a suitable pet-safe cleaning product. Rinse and dry it before adding fresh litter. Avoid strongly scented products or leaving cleaning-product residue behind, as some cats may be put off by strong fragrances.
What About the Scoop and Litter Mat?
Clean the litter scoop regularly and shake out or wash litter mats to remove tracked litter and waste. Wipe around the tray too, particularly if your cat tends to kick litter over the sides.
Listen To Your Cat
Some cats are particularly fussy about litter tray cleanliness and may avoid a tray they consider too dirty. If your cat suddenly starts toileting outside the tray, check that the tray is clean and easy to access, but also speak with your veterinarian to rule out a medical problem.
