Signs Your Bird Is Bored

Contents

Birds don’t always tell us they’re bored in obvious ways. Sometimes the signs can be subtle, while other birds may develop behaviours that are difficult for owners to ignore.

Common signs that your bird may need more enrichment include:

    • Excessive vocalisation or screaming
    • Feather picking or over-preening
    • Chewing cage bars
    • Pacing or repetitive movements
    • Increased aggression
    • Loss of interest in toys
    • Seeking constant attention

It’s important to remember that these behaviours can also be linked to health issues, so it’s always worth speaking with your avian veterinarian if you’re concerned.

For many birds, boredom develops gradually. A toy that was exciting a month ago may no longer capture their interest, or a bird that previously had lots of interaction may suddenly be spending more time alone.

Regular enrichment helps provide mental challenges and encourages natural behaviours such as climbing, chewing, shredding and problem solving.

If your bird seems restless, frustrated or overly dependent on attention, it may be time to refresh their environment.
