Turmeric has become increasingly popular for its medicinal benefits in both humans and animals. Turmeric is a plant from the ginger family and the therapeutic benefits attributed to the active component curcumin. The turmeric root is ground down to make a powder, rich dark-yellow (golden) in colour. Many foods, treats and supplements have turmeric added in the ingredients or it is available as a supplement on its own.
Turmeric has powerful antioxidant properties and may increase the body’s ability to neutralise free radicals before they damage healthy cells and cell membranes.
